Yuhan Liu (she/her) is a soprano, singer-songwriter, and music educator currently residing in Brandon, Manitoba. Starting off singing pop, rock, and musical theatre in high school, and now classically trained, Yuhan prides herself in being a truly flexible, multifaceted musician who can have a blast on stage singing any genre. Holding a B.MUS in Vocal Performance from Brandon University, Yuhan received opportunities to perform with several ensembles during her studies such as Chorale, Concert Choir, Chamber Ensemble, Opera, New Music Ensemble and Big Band. In 2019, Yuhan participated in the BU Concerto Competition, where she won the opportunity to record Handel’s “Piangero la sorte mia” with the BU Orchestra. Yuhan picked up the guitar in high school and is also a skilled songwriter in popular genres of music. Her lyrics are inspired by socials issues and longing to connect and reconcile with the parts of ourselves that inherently make us human, despite living in our currently much more disconnected and desensitized cultural and political climate. Currently, Yuhan shares her original music playing at small local venues with her acoustic guitar but plans to work on recording and sharing them with a larger audience in the near future.
Outside of performing, Yuhan further explores her love for music through education. She is currently working at the Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory of Music as a private vocal instructor teaching both classical and popular singing. As a teacher, Yuhan’s approach involves valuing each individual’s journey and goals in music. She hopes to help her students create a connection with music that is most meaningful to them, whether that means self expression, achieving goals, connecting with a community, or just having a fun hobby. Yuhan loves exploring vocal technique with her students through movement, mindful breathing, and gentle meditation to ensure that each utilizes their voice in a way that is free, healthy, grounded, and connected.
As a person of colour, woman, and member of the LGBTQ+ community, Yuhan prioritizes diversity and inclusivity in her music, performance, collaborations, and repertoire. Her objective as an artist is to foster a culture of empathy, love and connectedness through music, art, and education. In recent years she focuses mainly on advocating for women’s voices. In 2021, she was honorably nominated with 16 others as Brandon University’s “Outstanding Women of 2021”. Her current project in advocacy involves preparing a recital program of female composers featuring works by Alice Ping Yee Ho, Lili Boulanger, Margaret Bonds, and Clara Schumann.
